Greetings bird lovers! After a necessary break, Purple Parrot Rescue is up and fully running again.
A message from Purple Parrot

Hi everyone. I'm sure many of you have noticed there has been little activity from us lately. I apologise for this, and to those who've emailed us but not received a response. We will reply to you shortly.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we'll continue with our bird rescue effort. My husband is having some serious health concerns at the moment, and is unable to assist me in our aviaries, so I will need reduce the number of our own birds we keep.

I will be placing many of my own birds for sale on this site, separate to the rescued birds. It breaks my heart to have to do this, but unfortunately at the moment we don't have a lot of choice.

I will rehome each bird as we do with rescues. They mean a lot to me, and so there will be no 'first in, first served'. You'll need to tell me a bit about yourself, your lifestyle, past experience with birds, any that you currently own, where they'll be kept, etc.

Thanks for your understanding in this matter :).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

FOUND: AMAZON PARROT

We are seeking the owners of a tame Amazon Parrot found in Melbourne recently. Every effort made thus far to locate the owner has been unsuccessful. They are obviously very valuable birds, and we are eager to reunite it with it's undoubtedly distraught owners.

If you know anyone who has has lost one, please email or phone me. I need very specific information including the area it was lost in, the leg ring number and the exact species of Amazon.

Please no 'idiot' emails falsely claiming ownership. It will not be up for adoption if the owners aren't found.

Please email parrotrescue@optusnet.com.au or phone 0418 539 223.

Fingers crossed! :)

Please help us find a home.

We are still trying to find a new home for the 'special' Peachface Lovebird with the deformed beak. I've now clipped it so it looks almost normal. It will need occasional trimming in the future. He can now climb the wire, fly much better than he used to, and gets around almost as well as the rest of the Lovebirds. His feathers have started growing back too. His only special requirement is a ladder of some sort off the ground, and someone to trim his beak occasionally.

If you know anyone who'd be willing to take him on, please contact me. We do not have the room to keep him here long term, and he'd be so much happier with other Peachfaces.

We currently have up for adoption:

-Tame Rainbow Lorikeet

-Tame blue Quaker Parrot

-Breeding pair of Budgies

-Pair of Cockatiels

-Lutino Ringneck male

-Green Ringneck male

-Tame yellow Cockatiel

-Peachface with special needs

-Budgie with special needs

-Semi-tame Whiteface male Cockatiel

-11 year old Budgie looking to retire

-Peachface and hybrid Lovebirds

.......and more to come. Details and photos are on the 'adopt a bird' page.

A word on adoptions. Please do not email me with "How much is this bird?". It does not sit well with me that some people are concerned only about the price. If you want to know why we don't list adoption fees with each bird, see the 'adoption fees and information' page.

If you are genuinely interested in one of our birds for a companion or your aviary, please send a polite email with some information about yourself, eg. your lifestyle, past experience with birds, any current pets or small children in the house, or other relevant details. We ask these questions to ensure we match each bird with the most suitable person.

Thanks.

Tame Parrot

Hi all :).

We're looking for the owners of the latest rescue to come our way. He flew into a backyard and landed on someone in the Chadstone/Jordanville area. He's clearly someone's tame pet and loves people.

He is safe and well now, and has been pigging out after his ordeal 'in the wild'. He appears to be in good health, and probably under 2 years old. He has taken to us instantly and seems obsessed with preening people's hair. He also loves whistling and kisses and responds excitedly.

If this is your parrot or you may know the owner, please contact us. I need to know the bird's species, any identifying marks, words the bird responds to and any possible leg ring markings. If you have photos that would be very helpful. We would love to see this bird returned to it's rightful owner.

Phone or text: 0418 539 223

Email: parrotrescue@optusnet.com.au

Thanks,
Miranda :)

His owner reports that Frankie now rules the house and enjoys the system of ramps and ladders she's made since he can't fly properly. Excellent success story :D.

Harry and Houdini's antics.

Today has given us another amusing chapter in the ongoing tale of Harry and Houdini, the professional escape artist birds. I woke this morning to find they'd escaped their cage for the 8th time, this time by opening the cage roof. They were sitting there looking all innocent and cute, when I noticed one of my daughter's toys in their water bowl. I turned around to look at the kitchen table where it had come from and discovered this:

They'd climbed the leg of the chair up onto the table, knocked over my flower vase, cotton buds and chewed up sunglasses, toys and fridge magnets.

They'll be going to a new home in a few days where they'll have more space and plenty to occupy them so they won't feel the need to escape and destroy things.

As some of you may have read in a previous blog post, a few weeks back we were called out to catch two semi tame birds who had been wandering around in a backyard. They each had a wing clipped and one has a legring. All efforts thus far have failed to find their owners unfortunately.

This unlikely duo are a Cockatoo and Galah who have bonded and clearly been raised together. I find them nuzzling and preening eachother quite often, it's cute. I have named them Harry and Houdini. The little devils have made no less than 6 attempts at escaping from their cage, leaving little wonder how they left home in the first place.

They are very young birds, I'd say under 1 year. They're friendly enough to let me open the cage door and change the food and water bowls without worry. Harry is the quietest Cockatoo I've ever come across, and Houdini just makes little squeaky noises, also very quiet. So after chewing his way through the wire of my aviary one day, Houdini the Galah would have got away with his first escape attempt, had he not called out excitedly at Harry to follow him. This loud noise alerted me that something was up, so when I rushed outside I managed to scare him back in and block up the hole.

They've since been moved to a stronger Cocky cage, where they made another 5 attemps at escape. One day they figured out how to open the tough door latch, so I put a padlock on it. The next day they figured out how to turn the key in the padlock, take the key out, twist the padlock, take it off, undo the tough latch, push the door open and get out. They then sat on top of the cage making happy noises all proud of themselves.

We have arranged for them to go to a farm with large flight aviaries, so once their clipped wings grow back they'll be able to fly again and have plenty of room. They will also be kept together. They're so friendly I'd hate to see them separated.

Thanks for reading :).

Hi all,

We are hoping to locate the owners of 2 bonded parrots found near the corner of North Road and Clayton Road on Sunday 20/9.

They are fairly friendly birds and let us catch them without too much trouble. Both have one wing clipped and one bird has a legring. They are safe and healthy and are being well fed.

If these are your birds or you know the owners, please contact us with details. I need to know their species, legring number and any identifying features. Providing photos will help. I really want to see these birds returned home where they belong.

Phone or email Miranda:

parrotrescue@optusnet.com.au or 0418 539 223.

Thanks,

Miranda :)

Purple Parrot Rescue

Thanks to all those who supported out effort to find our lost birds. Unfortunately none were recovered :(. We just have to hope someone has caught at least some of them and is looking after them well.

On a lighter note, I've just put up cockatiels and budgies for adoption. We still have a few lovebirds left, and will have more lovebirds, cockatiels and budgies coming in soon. I'll also be putting up a tame cockatoo for adoption shortly.

Purple Parrot Rescue needs your help to find our birds this time. We are in Eumemmerring, which is part of Doveton. If you are located in the surrounding area, you may spot some our birds. Please keep an eye out.

Most of you would have experienced the gale force winds we had last night. I was concerned about the aviaries but thought we had them secured well enough. This morning at 7am I discovered our biggest aviary (which is 3 metres long and I thought was heavy and sturdy!) had blown over backwards, and we lost all the birds inside. I managed to catch my crested canaries who had hung around and weren't good flyers, but the rest had all flown away :(.

I lost:

6 Java Finches (fawns, plains, pieds)- still young so have baby colours

3 Red Factor Canaries

1 White Canary

1 breeding pair of Cockatiels- cinnamon lutino and grey/yellow pied

My favourite pair of Quails:

25 Zebra Finches

If you do spot any of these birds, please either do your best to catch them, or phone or text us immediately on 0418 539 223. They are much loved birds and very sadly missed :(.

For this reason, we will be removing the lizard canaries from the adoption page and keeping them with us, as they are all we have left. Sorry for any disappointment.

Miranda.
